Setup Your New Nigerian Site UP for SEO Success – A Step-by-Step Guide

Setting up a new website for SEO success in Nigeria requires careful planning. With over 80% of Nigerian internet users accessing websites via mobile devices, a mobile-first, speed-optimized, and locally relevant site is essential. This guide walks you through every step to ensure your Nigerian site ranks well on Google and attracts the right audience.

The very first step you need to take, once your web designer hands over your website to you, is to add it to Google Search Console.

Table of Contents

Here is how to add a new site to Google Search Console:

Go to Google Search Console  You need to create an account if you do not have one already. It’s pretty easy, so we will not discuss details here. Be sure to have access to your website. The example site we use in this tutorial is a WordPress site.

Follow these steps:

  1. Sign in with your Google account
  2. Click on “Add Property”

  1. Choose your property type:
  • Domain Property (Recommended)
  • URL Prefix (best for beginners or WordPress users)

Real-Life Illustration – Not Receiving Google Search Console Invitation Email

Not receiving a Google Search Console (GSC) invitation email is a common issue, often caused by email filters, propagation delays, or the fact that an invite email is not strictly required to gain access.

This actually happened to me while setting up access. Even after checking my Inbox, Spam/Junk, Promotions and Social folders, the invitation email still did not appear. But when I was removed and  re-added by the owner, I was able to login bypassing the invitation email.

Here are the primary reasons and steps to resolve this, based on common GSC behavior:

1. You Already Have Access (No Email Needed)

In many cases, GSC does not send a formal email invitation. Once the owner adds you, you are instantly granted access.

  • Action: Go directly to search.google.com/search-console and log in with the email address that was invited. Check if the property appears in your property list.

2. Incorrect Email or Non-Google Account

The email must be a valid Google Account (a Gmail address or a corporate email linked to Google Workspace).

  • Action: Double-check with the owner that they typed your email address correctly. If you used a non-Google email (e.g., Yahoo, Hotmail), you must ensure it is linked to a Google Account, or try using a Gmail address instead.

3. Email Filter/Spam/Category Issues

Even if you checked spam, the email might be blocked or filtered into a different folder (e.g., “Promotions” or “Updates” in Gmail).

  • Action: Search your entire mailbox for “Search Console” or “added as a user”.

4. Delayed Propagation

There can be a delay between the owner clicking “Add” and the system sending the notification.

  • Action: Wait at least 24 hours.

5. The “Pending” Status

If the owner added you but did not click “Save” or if the system is holding it, your status remains “Pending”.

  • Action: Ask the owner to go to Settings > Users and permissions in GSC to check if your email appears there. If it says “Pending,” they should delete the user and add them again.

Summary Checklist for Quick Resolution

  1. Ask the owner to re-add you, ensuring the email is correct.
  2. Log directly into GSC to check for the property, bypassing the email invite.
  3. Ensure the email used is a Google Account.
  4. If the property is a domain property, check if it was added using TXT/CNAME verification instead of user permissions.

Step 2. Connect Your Site to Google Analytics 4 (GA4)

After adding your site to Google Search Console, the next essential step is to connect it to Google Analytics 4 (GA4). While GSC shows how your site performs in Google search results, GA4 tracks actual visitor behavior, such as which pages are most visited, how long users stay, and where your traffic is coming from. This is critical for understanding your audience and improving your site’s performance over time.

How to Set Up GA4 for a Nigerian Website

  • Sign in to Google Analytics
Go to Google Analytics and log in with your Google account. If you don’t already have an account, create one. Use the same account you used for GSC to keep everything unified.
  • Create a New GA4 Property
    • Click “Admin” in the bottom-left corner
    • Under the “Property” column, click “Create Property”
    • Enter your website name, select Nigeria as your country, and your time zone
    • Click “Next” and complete the business information

  • Add the Tracking Code to Your WordPress Site
For most WordPress users, the easiest way is via a plugin:
    • Install Site Kit by Google or Rank Math / Yoast SEO
    • Follow the plugin instructions to connect GA4
    • Paste the measurement ID provided by GA4 into the plugin

Alternatively, if you prefer a manual method, you can copy the GA4 tracking code and paste it into the <head> section of your WordPress theme (Appearance → Theme Editor → header.php).

Tips to ensure proper tracking:

  • Make sure the GA4 property uses the same URL as your live website
  • If using a plugin, ensure it is active and correctly configured
  • Test in Realtime → Overview to see if visits are being recorded when you browse your site

Step 3: Local SEO – Google Business Profile & NAP

Once your website is connected to Google Search Console and GA4, the next priority is local SEO. For Nigerian businesses, appearing in Google Maps and local search results is crucial, because many people search for services “near me” or in their city.

Local SEO is all about making Google understand where your business is located and making it easy for users to find you.

Why Local SEO Matters in Nigeria

Google often shows a Map Pack (map + 3 local listings) for queries with location intent. Users trust businesses with consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) and also, local reviews improve credibility and click-through rates.

Claim Your Google Business Profile (GBP)

Ensure NAP Consistency

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone Number. For SEO:

  • Your business name, address, and phone number should be identical across all platforms:
    • Website footer/contact page
    • Social media pages (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn)
    • Nigerian directories (VConnect, BusinessList, Nigerian Yellow Pages)

Real-Life Tip: If even small differences exist (e.g., “St.” vs “Street”), Google may not recognize it as the same business, which can hurt your local rankings.

Encourage Reviews

Reviews are a major ranking factor for local SEO.

  • Ask satisfied customers to leave reviews on your Google Business Profile
  • Respond politely to all reviews, positive or negative
  • Aim for frequent reviews over time rather than a sudden burst

Add Photos and Posts

  • Upload high-quality images of your products, services, or office
  • Regularly post updates, offers, or announcements using GBP posts

Local SEO Quick Checklist

  • Google Business Profile claimed and verified
  • NAP is consistent across all platforms
  • Initial reviews collected
  • Photos uploaded and posts created

Once this is complete, your Nigerian business site will start appearing in local search results and Google Maps, increasing visibility and potential leads.

Step 4: Nigerian-Focused Keyword Research

Keyword research is the foundation of SEO because it tells you what your potential customers are searching for. For a Nigerian website, it’s important to target local terms, long-tail keywords, and phrases your audience actually uses.

Understand Your Audience

  • Identify the cities or regions you serve (e.g., Lagos, Abuja, Ibadan)
  • Consider the language or spelling Nigerians commonly use:
    • “Colour” instead of “color”
    • Local slang where appropriate

Example: Instead of targeting “web design,” use “affordable web design in Lagos”

Use Keyword Research Tools

Some free and paid tools to find local keywords:

  1. Google Keyword Planner – Free, works well for Nigerian cities
  2. Ahrefs – For keyword difficulty, volume, and Nigerian backlinks
  3. SEMrush – Competitor keyword analysis
  4. Ubersuggest – Quick local keyword suggestions

Real-Life Tip: When I set up a Nigerian site, using city-specific long-tail keywords drastically reduced competition and brought higher conversions.

Focus on Long-Tail Keywords

Long-tail keywords are longer, more specific phrases that often convert better. Compared to generic “shoes” which is highly competitive

Example: “affordable handmade leather shoes in Abuja

Benefits: It is easier to rank in Nigeria’s competitive niche and more likely to attract serious buyers

Organize Keywords by Page Type

  • Homepage: Target broad, high-traffic keywords (e.g., “web design Lagos”)
  • Service Pages: Use service-specific keywords with city tags (e.g., “SEO consultant in Abuja”)
  • Blog Posts: Answer questions or address problems using long-tail keywords (e.g., “how to start a fashion business in Nigeria”)

Keyword Research Checklist

  • Target Nigerian cities and local terms
  • Include long-tail keywords
  • Analyze search volume and competition
  • Organize by page type (homepage, service pages, blog)

Proper keyword research ensures your content will rank for terms your Nigerian audience actually searches, giving your site a higher chance of appearing in Google results.

Step 5: Technical SEO & Mobile Optimization

After setting up GSC, GA4, GBP, and keyword research, it’s time to make sure your Nigerian website is technically optimized. Technical SEO ensures Google can crawl and index your website correctly while improving user experience for visitors, especially on mobile devices.

Mobile-First Design

  • With over 80% of Nigerian internet users on smartphones, your site must be responsive.
  • Test your website using Google Mobile-Friendly Test.
  • Fix issues like overlapping elements, small buttons, or slow-loading pages.

results showing your site is mobile-ready

Many Nigerian businesses lose traffic because their desktop-focused sites are not readable on mobile. Even small adjustments, like increasing font size or button spacing, make a huge difference.

Speed Optimization

Website speed is critical in Nigeria due to inconsistent internet connectivity. A slow site can hurt rankings and frustrate users.

How to optimize speed:

  1. Compress Images – Use tools like TinyPNG to reduce image sizes without losing quality
  2. Caching Plugins – Install WP Rocket or W3 Total Cache to store pages for faster loading
  3. Content Delivery Network (CDN) – Use Cloudflare or a local CDN to serve content faster across Nigeria
  4. Minify Scripts – Reduce CSS, JS, and HTML file sizes

On a test Nigerian WordPress site, compressing images and enabling caching reduced load time from 8s – 2.5s, significantly improving both rankings and user engagement.

Clear URL Structure

  • Use descriptive URLs with your target keywords:
    • Example: www.yoursite.ng/affordable-web-design-lagos
  • Avoid unnecessary numbers, symbols, or dates in URLs.

Benefits – It iseasier for Google to crawl and index. Also, users understand page content just by reading the URL

Step 6: Content Strategy That Resonates

After setting up GSC, GA4, GBP, keyword research, and technical SEO, your next focus is creating content that your Nigerian audience finds useful, trustworthy, and engaging. Content is the heart of SEO, it tells Google what your site is about and keeps visitors coming back.

Focus on E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authority, Trust)

Google values content that demonstrates:

  • Experience: Show that you or your team have hands-on experience in your niche
  • Expertise: Offer accurate, well-researched information
  • Authority: Link to reputable sources or get backlinks from trusted sites
  • Trust: Include clear contact info, business details, and privacy/security measures

For example: Publishing well-structured, informative blog posts like the example above helps build trust with your audience and shows Google that your site provides valuable, relevant content.

Use local keywords naturally in titles, headings, and content.

Guest Blogging on Nigerian Websites

One of the most effective ways to build backlinks is by writing articles for other websites.

  • Reach out to Nigerian blogs, news sites, or niche websites
  • Offer to write helpful content related to your industry
  • Include a link back to your website within the article

Example:
