You have been practising. You feel like you understand the passages. But the questions keep coming back wrong. Sound familiar? The problem is almost never your English it is a handful of specific habits that quietly cost you marks every single time. Here is what they are and how to fix them.

Reason 1 – You Are Reading the Entire Passage Before Answering

This is the most common mistake Nigerian beginners make and the most damaging to your time. Starting by reading the entire passage can lead to a shortage of time. The questions are presented in order, so skim the passage while addressing each question as it appears, allowing for more efficient time management. Go to the questions first, identify what each one is asking, then go back to the relevant paragraph to find the answer.

Reason 2 – You Are Missing the Word “NOT” in Questions

One of the most common mistakes test takers make is mistaking a negative factual question for a factual question meaning they overlooked the word “NOT” or “EXCEPT” in the question and were therefore looking for the wrong answer entirely. Before answering any question, read it at least twice. When you see NOT or EXCEPT, circle it on your scratch paper so it stays in your awareness.

Reason 3 – You Are Matching Words Instead of Meaning

A very common mistake is that test takers tend to match the wording of an answer choice rather than focusing on the main idea. You might end up selecting the wrong option because you are not considering the meaning of the passage just focusing on the word itself. TOEFL answer choices are deliberately paraphrased. The correct answer will rarely use the exact words from the passage, it will express the same meaning differently.

Reason 4 – You Are Getting Stuck on Small Details

Students can get stuck at a small detail, a particular phrase, or a specific fact from the article spending too long on one idea and one question. Small details are important but not as important as the overall idea of the passage. If you are spending more than 90 seconds on a single question, make your best guess and move on. Getting stuck is the fastest way to run out of time before you even reach the final questions.

Reason 5 – You Are Not Reviewing Your Wrong Answers

This is the most overlooked fix. There are only three reasons why you get a TOEFL Reading question wrong you misread the passage, you misread the question, or you did not understand the vocabulary. After every practice session, go back to every wrong answer and identify which of these three caused the error. Then adjust your approach specifically for that mistake. Understand why each answer is right or wrong, take notes, and revisit the same questions after about two weeks to reinforce your understanding and reduce the chance of repeating mistakes.

Reason 6 – You Are Skimming Too Much

A common mistake is to skim too much, which results in missing out on many important details that might be required to accurately answer the question. Skimming is a tool not a replacement for careful reading. Use it to get the main idea and locate the right paragraph, then switch to close reading when you are in the relevant section.

The One Habit That Fixes Everything

Your task in the TOEFL Reading section is more about eliminating wrong choices than finding the perfect answer. When you answer questions, eliminate choices you believe are incorrect and write them down on your scratch paper. This narrows your focus on the remaining choices and prevents second-guessing.

The goal is not to read more it is to read smarter. Fix these habits one by one and your Reading score will follow.
