A User Interface (UI) refers to all the visual, interactive elements of a digital product. It’s basically everything that you can see or interact with on a website, mobile app, web app or any other digital interface.
From the typography, font colors, and layout to the buttons and icons, all of these are part of the user interface.
UI design is the creation of these visual and interactive elements. It focuses on making sure that the interface of a digital product is as intuitive as possible.
Tasks of a UI designer
- Visual Design: Determining the overall look of the interface
- Layout and Spacing: This involves arranging elements on the screen for clarity and visual balance
- Interactive Elements Design: Creating the design for the buttons, sliders, icons and other interactive elements on the screen
- Creating Styles Guides: This means creating a guide for the the visual and interactive parts of a digital product should look and work.
- User Interface Prototypes: Building interactive models that simulate how the interface will work after completion
- Ensuring Visual Consistency: This is making sure the design elements are consistent across all screens and platforms, no matter the screen size or OS
- Working with Developers to ensure correct implementation of the design
UX design is the process of identifying and understanding the end-users’ needs and creating an effective, relevant and easy-to-use solution for it.
Tasks of a UX Designer
- User Research: This involves conducting interviews to understand user needs
- Creating User Personas: Inventing imaginary users based on the data gotten from user research to help the team understand the needs of their users
- Mapping User Journeys: Visualizing the steps a user will take when using the app to identify areas that need improvement.
- Product Structure: Structuring content in a logical and intuitive way
- Creating Wireframes
- Prototyping
- Usability Testing: Testing with real users to see how they interact with the product
- Analyzing User Feedback
- Collaboration with UI designers and Developers
- Iteration and Improvement
UX and UI go hand-in-hand, one can’t be complete without the other. However, they are not the same. UX design is all about the overall feel and experience a user has when they use interface, while UI is all about how the product’s interface looks and works.
