TOEFL Writing Task 2: How to Write a High-Scoring Academic Essay

Understanding the Task

In TOEFL iBT Writing Task 2 (Independent Writing), you have 10 minutes to write an essay of at least 120+ words on a given topic. You must clearly state your opinion and support it with reasons and examples. Common question types include:

• Agree/Disagree
• Preference (e.g., “Which is better…?”)
• Both sides discussion

Scoring focus (out of 5): Development & Support, Organization, Language Use, and Addressing the Topic.

Recommended Essay Structure (3-4 Paragraphs)

1. Introduction (4-6 sentences)
– Paraphrase the prompt
– State your clear thesis (opinion)

2. Body Paragraph 1 (Main Reason 1)
– Topic sentence
– Explanation + specific example
– Link back to thesis

3. Optional Body Paragraph 3 (Acknowledge the other view) – Although some might argue that [briefly restate the counterargument or another student’s idea], [state why it is less effective or doesn’t apply to your situation].

5. Conclusion (3-5 sentences)
– Restate thesis in new words
– Summarize key points
– Strong closing statement

Top Tips for a High Score

• Clear Thesis: Make your position obvious in the first paragraph.
• Strong Development: Use specific, detailed examples (personal experience, history, studies). Avoid vague statements.
• Organization: Use transition words (Furthermore, In addition, However, For example, Therefore).
• Vocabulary & Grammar: Mix complex sentences, advanced vocabulary, and varied structures. Minor errors are okay if meaning is clear.
• Word Count: Aim for 120+ words.
