Today, I took a TOEFL practice test covering the Reading and Listening sections, and I came away with some useful observations.
Surprisingly, I found the Reading section easier than expected. One thing that helped me a lot was reading quickly without trying to understand every single word or sentence. You don’t need to fully understand the entire passage. What matters most is understanding the context and knowing where to find information when questions are asked.
Another skill that made a difference was recognizing keywords. The TOEFL often rephrases information, so being able to spot key ideas and related words can save a lot of time.
The Listening section was a different story. It reminded me how important note-taking is. If you’re preparing for TOEFL, spend time improving your note-taking skills. However, don’t make the mistake of trying to write down everything you hear. That approach usually causes you to miss important information.
Instead, focus on key points, transitions, examples, and important words that signal changes in ideas. Recognizing these words can help you follow the conversation or lecture more effectively and answer questions with confidence.
My takeaway from today’s practice test: Fast reading, keyword recognition, and effective note-taking are skills that can significantly improve your TOEFL performance.
