One of the smartest things you can do before your TOEFL exam is know exactly what question types are waiting for you in the Reading section. When you recognise a question type instantly, you already know your strategy before you finish reading it.

The TOEFL Reading section includes two passages, each around 700 words long, with 10 questions per passage and 35 minutes total to complete the section. Here is a breakdown of every question type you will face:

    1. Factual Information Questions

These are the most straightforward. They ask you to find specific information from a particular part of the passage questions like “What does the author say about Y in paragraph 2?” Go directly to the relevant paragraph rather than rereading the whole passage.

    2. Negative Factual Questions

These ask what is NOT mentioned or NOT true according to the passage. They are tricky because three answer choices are correct you are looking for the one that is wrong. Read all four options carefully before choosing.

    3. Inference Questions

These questions test your understanding of ideas that are implied but not directly stated in the passage. The answer will not be written word for word you must read between the lines and draw a logical conclusion.

    4. Vocabulary Questions

These test your ability to understand the meaning of a word as it is specifically used in the passage. The same word can mean different things in different contexts always go back and read the full sentence before choosing your answer.

    5. Rhetorical Purpose Questions

These ask why the author mentioned a particular detail or piece of information. To answer correctly, you need to understand the main point of the paragraph and how that detail connects to it. Look for the question phrased as “Why does the author mention X?”

    6. Paraphrase Questions

These ask you to choose a sentence that means the same thing as a highlighted sentence in the passage, expressed in different words. Eliminate options that change the original meaning, even slightly.

    7. Sentence Insertion Questions

Also called coherence questions you are given a sentence and asked to find the most appropriate place to insert it within the passage. Look for logical flow, signal words, and how the surrounding sentences connect.

    8. Summary Questions

These ask you to choose three sentences from six options that best summarise the main ideas of the passage. Avoid options that are too specific, too minor, or not actually mentioned in the passage.

The Simple Strategy for All Question Types

Questions do not simply test your fact-finding ability they test your understanding of sentence structure, tone, vocabulary, main points, and logical organisation. For every question, go back to the passage. Never answer purely from memory. The answer is always there your job is to find it efficiently.

Know the question types. Know the strategy for each. Walk in prepared.
