The Three Main Passage Types

Exposition Passages

Historical Passages

These passages discuss events, people, movements, or developments from the past. They often explain causes and effects, compare different periods, or describe how something evolved over time. History, art history, and social sciences are common sources for this passage type.

What Topics Appear in TOEFL Passages?

TOEFL passages cover university-level subjects including natural sciences like biology, astronomy, and geology social sciences like psychology, economics, sociology and humanities like history, art, and architecture. You do not need prior knowledge of these subjects to answer correctly. Everything you need is in the passage itself.

One Practical Tip for Each Passage Type

For exposition passages focus on definitions and how ideas connect to each other. For argumentation passages identify the main claim in the introduction and track how each paragraph supports it. For historical passages pay attention to dates, sequences, and cause-and-effect relationships.
