If you are planning to study abroad on a scholarship, your TOEFL score is not just an admission requirement it is a gateway to funding. And the bar is higher than many Nigerian beginners expect.

What Score Do You Actually Need?

There is no single universal number, but here is a clear breakdown:

A minimum score of 84 is required to apply for TOEFL Grants and Awards.That is the entry point. But for most competitive scholarships, 84 is not enough to stand out.

A score of 100 or higher ensures a better chance of securing scholarships. And for elite institutions and fully-funded programmes, a score above 100 is generally considered competitive for most TOEFL scholarships.

What About Popular Scholarship Destinations?

• For the USA: highly selective universities often require 100 and above, while mid-tier schools may accept scores in the 80 to 100 range.
• For the UK: top scholarship programmes like Chevening and Commonwealth expect scores that align with university requirements, which for Russell Group institutions means 90 to 100 minimum.
• For Canada: top universities like the University of Toronto and McGill typically ask for 89 to 100, with no section below 22.

It Is Never Just About the Score

Your TOEFL score opens the door, but it does not win the scholarship alone. A higher TOEFL score enhances your chances, but scholarship providers also assess academic performance, leadership qualities, and other eligibility criteria.
