But it requires more than just good English. It requires strategy, consistency, and a clear understanding of what the exam is actually testing.

This guide will show you exactly how to get there.

First, Understand What 100+ Actually Means
The TOEFL iBT is scored on a scale of 0 to 120, with each of the four sections contributing up to 30 points. A score between 90 and 100 is generally considered good, but many top universities require a minimum of 100 or above.

So to score above 100, you need to average at least 25 out of 30 in each section. That is not perfection but it is excellence. And excellence is achievable with the right approach.

Step 1 – Take a Diagnostic Test First

Before you touch a single preparation book, take a full practice test. Dedicating quality time to mock tests and practice papers can guide you on how to score 100 in TOEFL iBT. But more importantly, your first test tells you your starting point. Without knowing where you are, you cannot build a plan to get where you need to go.

Listening – Aim for 25+

Listen to academic lectures on YouTube daily to sharpen your ear for this style of English.

Speaking – Aim for 25+

Practice speaking English as much as possible in daily life. This is the simplest and most powerful advice for this section. The more you speak English outside of preparation sessions, the more natural and confident you sound on exam day. Record yourself answering practice questions and listen back critically. Are you organised? Are you clear? Are you finishing within the time limit?

Writing – Aim for 25+

The Writing section has two tasks, Integrated and Independent. For the Integrated task, practise summarising what you read and hear in your own words accurately. This is non-negotiable for anyone targeting 100+. The official ETS practice materials are the most accurate reflection of the real exam the question types, the difficulty level, the timing. Third-party materials are helpful supplements, but they should never replace official resources.

The ETS website offers free practice tests and paid preparation packages. At minimum, complete every free resource available before your exam date.

Step 5 Simulate Real Exam Conditions

The TOEFL iBT is three and a half hours long. Most students struggle to sit in the same place for more than 20 minutes without distraction. A recommended approach is to use focused study sessions 25 minutes of intense work followed by a 5-minute break to train your concentration for sitting in one place for extended periods.

When you take full mock tests, do them exactly as you would the real exam. No phone. No breaks outside the scheduled ones. No pausing the audio. The more familiar that environment feels before exam day, the less nervous you will be when it counts.

Step 6 – Be Consistent, Not Intense

This is where most Nigerian students go wrong in the final stretch they cram. Two weeks of intense last-minute studying cannot replace two months of steady daily practice.

Consistency will always beat cramming. Start your preparation months before your test and practise with real materials to refine your strategies day by day. Two focused hours every day will do more for your score than ten exhausting hours the day before.
