Feeling nervous before the TOEFL is completely normal. Every test-taker feels some level of anxiety the difference between those who perform well and those who do not is how they manage it. Here is exactly what to do before and during exam day.

The Night Before – Set Yourself Up for Calm

Do not study intensely the night before the exam. Instead, glance through key notes lightly and avoid mental exhaustion. Pack everything you need in advance your international passport, your confirmation letter, and anything else required. Eat a light meal, drink water, and get seven to eight hours of sleep. Your brain needs rest far more than it needs one more practice question.

Consider not telling too many people you are taking the test. Having lots of people ask you about studying and results every day just puts more pressure on you and Nigeria has no shortage of well-meaning relatives who will do exactly that.

On the Morning of the Exam

Do some deep breathing before you leave home. Just a few minutes of this practice can significantly reduce stress and anxiety. Eat a proper breakfast something with enough energy to last you through the exam. Arrive at the test centre at least 30 minutes early. Arriving late or rushing through Lagos traffic right before your exam is one of the fastest ways to destroy your composure before the test even begins.

If possible, visit the test centre a day or two before your exam date just to know the route and the environment. Familiarity with the location alone can meaningfully reduce anxiety on the actual day.

During the Exam – Stay Present

If you feel overwhelmed during the test, pause briefly and take a few deep breaths. During the 10-minute break between sections, take deep breaths and relax. Use that break to eat a small snack something with a bit of sugar or glucose to keep your energy up for the second half.

If you encounter a difficult question, do not freeze. Make your best guess and move on. Getting stuck on one question and losing composure for the next five is far more damaging than simply guessing and keeping your momentum.

    Shift Your Perspective

Instead of worrying about not doing well, visualise yourself getting the score you need. Remember one test will not determine your entire future. You can take the TOEFL more than once, and many institutions consider qualifications beyond just test scores.

The strongest buffer against exam anxiety is preparation. Knowing the format inside out, practising under timed conditions, and reviewing your weak areas all contribute to a sense of control something that naturally eases anxiety.

You have done the work. Trust it. Walk in calm, breathe deeply, and take it one question at a time.
