Categories help you organize content in WordPress so readers can find related posts easily. A clean category structure keeps your blog and site navigation clear.

    1. What categories are used for
Categories group related posts under broad topics. Every post in WordPress should belong to at least one category.

    Examples:

    • Tutorials
    • News
    • Updates
    • Reviews

    2. Create a new category

    Go to:
    Dashboard → Posts → Categories

    Fill in:

    • Name — the category title
    • Slug — URL-friendly version
    • Parent Category (optional) — for subcategories
    • Description (optional)

    Click Add New Category.

    3. Assign categories to a post

When creating or editing a post:

    • Locate the Categories panel
    • Check the category you want
    • Update or publish the post

You can assign multiple categories, but keep it minimal.

    4. Create subcategories

Use parent categories to build structure.

    Example:

    • Tutorials
      • WordPress
      • HTML
      • CSS

    This improves site organization.

    5. Edit or delete categories

    Go to:
    Posts → Categories

    From there you can:

    • Edit names
    • Change slugs
    • Delete unused categories

    6. Follow best practices

    • Keep category names broad
    • Avoid too many categories
    • Do not duplicate tags as categories
    • Plan your structure early

A well-planned category system makes your WordPress site easier to navigate and manage.
