How to Avoid Repetition in TOEFL Writing (A Guide for Nigerian Beginners)

Repetition is one of the quietest score killers in TOEFL Writing. When an examiner reads the same word, phrase, or idea three times in one essay, it signals limited vocabulary and weak organisation two things that directly pull your score down. Here is how to fix it.

Why Repetition Happens in the First Place

Most Nigerian students repeat themselves for one of two reasons they run out of vocabulary mid-essay, or they did not plan their response before writing and end up circling the same idea without realising it. Skipping planning leads to disorganized ideas, repetition, illogical sentence order, and last-minute rewriting. Spending just 30 seconds outlining before you write eliminates most repetition before it starts.

Use Synonyms – But Use Them Carefully

While it is tempting to use certain words repeatedly, it is better to use synonyms to avoid sounding repetitive. But caution is key, ensure these synonyms or any new vocabulary fit the context of your essay. Misused words, even if they are sophisticated, can do more harm than good.

For example, if your essay is about education, do not use the word “students” in every sentence. Rotate between “learners,” “test-takers,” “candidates,” and “young people” depending on context. Build a personal list of synonym pairs during your preparation and practise using them naturally.

Vary Your Sentence Structure

Repetition is not just about words it is also about sentence patterns. Writing five sentences in a row that all start with “This shows that…” or “I believe that…” creates a monotonous rhythm that examiners notice immediately. Include a mix of sentence types simple, complex, and compound, and avoid repeating words too many times. Simple sentences offer clarity. Compound and complex sentences add depth and demonstrate stronger command of English.

Use Transition Words to Connect Ideas Without Repeating Them

One of the most effective ways to move between ideas without repeating yourself is through strong transition phrases. Use appropriate transitions that fit the context and purpose of your writing. Different transitions serve different purposes such as showing contrast, providing examples, or indicating cause and effect.

For example, instead of restating your first point to introduce your second, use “Furthermore,” “In addition,” or “Building on this idea” to signal that you are moving forward not backward.

Do Not Repeat the Discussion Prompt or Other Students’ Arguments

This is especially important in the Academic Discussion task. Feel free to ignore the other students, but do not repeat their arguments by mistake. Read what has already been said, then make sure your response adds something new. Paraphrasing someone else’s point as if it is your own does not earn credit, it signals you have nothing original to contribute.

Paraphrase Instead of Quoting

In the Integrated Writing Task specifically, copying words directly from the reading passage earns you zero points for vocabulary. Paraphrase the passages, one of the grading criteria on the TOEFL is vocabulary, and you will earn zero points if you simply quote the material. Restate ideas from the reading and lecture entirely in your own words.

Proofread With Repetition in Mind

When you review your essay in the final two minutes, read it specifically looking for repeated words and ideas. If you used the same word more than twice in one paragraph, replace at least one instance with a synonym. If two of your body paragraphs make the same point with different words, cut one and strengthen the other.

Avoiding repetition is not a talent it is a habit. Plan before you write, build your synonym vocabulary, vary your sentence structures, and review before you submit. Those four habits alone will noticeably improve the quality and score of every TOEFL essay you write.
