KeymasterThe short answer is yes absolutely. Many test-takers prepare for and pass the TOEFL without formal tuition by using self-study, free and paid online resources, and deliberate practice. In fact, one student scored 112 out of 120 by practising for only four days using nothing but official ETS materials.
But this is important self-study only works if you are honest with yourself and disciplined with your time.
What Makes Self-Study Work
The TOEFL tests measurable skills that respond well to structured practice. The test format is fixed and well-documented, and scoring rubrics and sample responses are freely available. This means everything you need to prepare is already out there you do not need a classroom to access it.
You do not need a big coaching class if you study properly at home. Just one hour daily is enough as long as you have a smart plan.
When Coaching Actually Helps
Self-study has one weakness: feedback. If there is a lack of logical organisation in your writing or your speaking answers are too short, a teacher can identify and correct those issues faster than self-study alone. If Speaking and Writing are your weak sections, targeted coaching or even a one-time tutor session can save you weeks of guessing.
The Smart Middle Ground for Nigerian Beginners
You do not have to choose between full coaching and going it alone. Thousands of students score 90, 100, even 110+ using self-study alone the real difference is not talent but choosing the right materials and using them correctly.
Start with official ETS practice materials. Use free resources like TED Talks, YouTube academic channels, and TOEFL forums. If you hit a plateau in Speaking or Writing, consider one or two targeted feedback sessions not a full coaching programme.
Coaching is helpful. But it is not compulsory. What is compulsory is consistency.
