KeymasterOne of the biggest excuses Nigerian students give for not preparing properly is cost. But the truth is some of the best TOEFL preparation resources in the world are completely free. You just need to know where to look.
1. ETS Official Website
ETS creates the TOEFL, so their official resources are as authentic as it gets and they have significantly expanded their free offerings. Go to ets.org and access free practice tests, sample questions, and preparation materials for all four sections. To download free practice tests, go to ets.org, click TOEFL, then Test Takers, select TOEFL iBT, click Resources, and then Practice Test. This is always your starting point no other resource is more accurate than the official one.
2. Magoosh TOEFL
Magoosh has been helping millions of students study for TOEFL since 2010. While their full course is paid, their free blog at magoosh.com/toefl contains detailed guides, vocabulary lists, practice questions, and study plans that are genuinely useful for Nigerian beginners at no cost.
3. YouTube – Free Lessons Every Day
YouTube is a great platform to find both beginner and advanced TOEFL content from full-length test guides to quick vocabulary and grammar tips. Channels like NoteFull TOEFL Mastery, TST Prep, and E2 TOEFL offer free structured lessons covering every section of the exam. These channels are updated regularly and completely free.
4. BestMyTest – Free Practice Tests
BestMyTest at bestmytest.com offers free TOEFL sample tests online including Speaking and Writing scoring. It is one of the best TOEFL resources outside the official ETS simulator for free practice tests and exam preparation.
5. Exam English
Exam English offers free practice sets for Reading, Listening, spelling, and vocabulary all designed to boost your confidence for the TOEFL test. It is simple, clean, and easy to use perfect for Nigerian beginners who want quick daily practice without any complicated setup.
6. TED Talks and BBC
These are not TOEFL-specific but they are incredibly powerful. TED Talks at ted.com and BBC Learning English at bbc.co.uk/learningenglish are both completely free and closely mirror the academic English style used in the TOEFL Listening section. Use them daily.
One Important Warning
Make sure any resource you use has been updated for the current TOEFL format. If a resource does not mention recent format changes, it is probably outdated. Stick to materials that explicitly address the current test. Using old materials will prepare you for an exam that no longer exists.
Start with ETS. Add Magoosh and YouTube. Practice daily with Exam English. Your TOEFL preparation does not have to cost a fortune, it just has to be consistent.
